Defining Anaphylaxis

Question #51

Does base hospital use "two or more body systems" when defining anaphylaxis?

Answer:

No. Base hospital does not use a “two or more body systems” definition when classifying anaphylaxis. Our approach is to utilize the presence of any life-threatening symptomatology. This means that a patient presenting with isolated hypotension, or with significant respiratory distress alone, would meet the criteria for anaphylaxis and should receive epinephrine. In cases where multiple systems are involved but symptoms are less severe, treatment is guided by whether the presentation aligns with the “moderate to severe” symptom criteria outlined in the directive.
